Tektites are extraordinary, natural glass stones formed by cosmic collisions when giant meteorites crashed into Earth millions of years ago. Unlike meteorites themselves, tektites are actually terrestrial rocks and soil that were instantly melted by the extreme heat and pressure of an impact, splashed high into the atmosphere, and quickly cooled into dark, glassy objects as they rained back down to the ground.
