An iridescent ammonoid (or ammonite) is a spectacular prehistoric fossil that gleams with shifting, metallic rainbow colours when held under light. Unlike specimens that are artificially enhanced, this glowing, opalescent effect is completely natural, created when the original "mother-of-pearl" shell layers are perfectly preserved over tens of millions of years.
