Pterochelus velificus (historically classified as Pterynotus velificus and accepted by some modern registries under the genus Timbellus) is an extinct species of prehistoric sea snail belonging to the family Muricidae, commonly known as murex or rock snails.First described by natural history scientist Ralph Tate in 1888, this fossilised gastropod is highly regarded by collectors for its beautifully complex, wing-like shell geometry.
