Conophyton basalticum is a rare, 500-million-year-old species of fossilised stromatolite uniquely known for growing on ancient volcanic terrain.Dating back to the Lower-to-Middle Cambrian Period, these fossils are highly unusual compared to most other stromatolites. Instead of forming standard rounded mounds in calm lime-rich seas, these microbial communities built sharply pointed, cone-shaped columns directly over cooled volcanic lava plains.
