Aegirine (also known as acmite) is a striking sodium iron silicate mineral belonging to the pyroxene family, most famous for its glossy, needle-like or blade-shaped crystals that range from deep smoky green to jet black. Discovered in Norway in 1835, it was aptly named after Ægir, the Norse god of the sea, because its jagged, dark green-black shapes resembled the deep ocean.
